Giving Voices
The Giving Voices podcast is a creative exploration of the impact of social injustice on the mental health of Black young males in Dudley.
Young Black artists from Dudley will be speaking with a range of experts including community leaders and activists, to discuss topics such as Black families, grief, racism, discrimination, poverty, and violence, and examining how these issues intersect with mental health and the best ways to overcome these challenges.

The project was led by a team of young creatives and supported by Time Rebel Marlene Fortes, the founder of Creart Collective CIC.

GIVING VOICES Journal
June 2023 - 1st Session - Group Gathering
During the first session, the group came together to get to know each other and discuss what matters to them and what they want to voice through the podcast. They decide on the important themes that they want to discuss. After the discussion, the group decides to change the podcast name to "Giving Voices" as it is more suitable. They also finalise the following themes:
Growing up in Dudley
Growing up in Dudley as a migrant kid
Struggles faced in school
Career expectations
Migrant parents' expectations
Racial discrimination in schools and society
Implications on mental health
Overcoming mental health struggles
2nd Session - First Podcast Trial
During the second session, the group faced many doubts on how to set up the equipment and capture sound effectively. They work together to set up the scenario for recording. However the trial didn’t end up as we wanted to. Decision: it would be best for the group to receive training to learn how to improve their skills and be better prepared for the podcast. We connect with Aspire4u CIC, a youth group specialised in podcasting, who agree to provide training for a fee.
We agreed on 3 half day training sessions:

Interview Alex Jones - Theme – Growing Up in Dudley as an Autistic kid
In this podcast episode, we delve into the inspiring journey of Alex, a young adult from Dudley who has autism. Alex reflects on his experiences growing up in Dudley and the unique challenges he has faced throughout his life. He bravely shares the struggles he has encountered and the obstacles he has overcome, shedding light on the importance of understanding and accommodating the needs of individuals with autism. Alex also opens about his expectations from society, emphasizing the significance of inclusivity and support in order to create a more inclusive and understanding community.

Theme- Black artist journey Growing up in Dudley
Interviewed Vaddy. Vaddy, a young artist originally from Nigeria who moved to Dudley in his teens. Vaddy shares with us his aspirations as a musician, the struggles he has faced, and the expectations his parents have had for him. Vaddy's journey as a musician began at a young age, with a deep passion for music that was nurtured in his hometown in Nigeria. He has dreams of making it big in the music industry and was determined to pursue his passion. Moving to a new country brought its own set of challenges for Vaddy. He had to adjust to a new culture, a different music scene, and face the difficulties of being a teenager in a foreign land. Despite these obstacles, Vaddy remained determined to pursue his musical aspirations.

In this podcast, we are excited to have Olu Amudipe, one of the Directors of Creart Collective, as our guest. Olu was raised in Dudley and has a deep connection to the community. The purpose of this podcast is to showcase Olu's journey and use it as a platform to mentor young adults from Dudley, particularly those from the Black youth community. Olu's story serves as an inspiration and a testament to the idea that with hard work and the right guidance, anyone can thrive. As the owner of several successful companies in Birmingham, Olu has achieved great success in his career. His accomplishments make him an ideal role model for young adults who aspire to make a difference in their own lives and communities. Through this podcast, Olu aims to share his experiences, challenges, and successes with the hope of motivating and guiding the next generation.
What’s next
Moving forward, the podcast will continue as a Creart Collective project, with Bruno as the host and Olu as the main guest along with other young males, participating in future episodes. Olu will not only share his personal journey but also delve into his business model. This will provide valuable insights into entrepreneurship, leadership, and the strategies that have contributed to Olu's success.
Overall, this podcast aims to empower and inspire young adults from Dudley, particularly those from the Black youth community. Through Olu's mentorship and guidance, coupled with the open dialogue and feedback from the participants, this podcast will serve as a valuable resource for personal and professional development.
